Shopping for an ebike? Don’t make these mistakes. Paul and Liz share ten tips for buying an ebike. Half of the people we meet in campgrounds bought the wrong bike!

Especially now, if you are shopping for an ebike, you will likely have to buy your electric bicycle online. It would be difficult to say the least to return a bike ordered online– especially if you decide you don’t like it after you assemble it. There are some very important things to look out for when buying an ebike including range, watts, and more.

*****
Tips (10 tips plus 3 bonus tips!)
*****
1. Decide road or trail/mountain (where do you want to ride?)
2. Get pedal assist if you want exercise
3. Get throttle-only if you DON’T want exercise
4. Best option: pedal assist AND throttle
5. Know that some places ban ebikes
6. Avoid twist throttle
7. Get enough range
8. If you want to do hills, get 500 watt or more
9. Get a mid-drive motor if you plan to do hills
10. Decide how much you’ll use an ebike
11. Weight of an electric bicycle is an important factor
12. Plan on getting a new bike rack, especially for ebikes
13. Protect your ebike from theft

****
Notes
****

To figure out range, multiply volts times amp hours, which will give you watt hours. Then compare watt hours to the size of the motor. That will give you an idea of how far you can go.

  2. kevin james dawes February 21, 2021 @ 9:28 pm

Having owned 2 electric bikes nd worked on a few I’ll simplify this to 3 points. First .folding bikes are ok if you have a ground floor flat other wise they are pointless. Second. Dont buy 24v bikes. The range is pathetic because you’re taking the wattage for the amps instead of volts. Lastly never buy a high end ebike. In 2 years time you wont be able to get any parts for it. voice of experience. They dont do any thing the budget ancheer, etc, bike do. High end stuff tends to have wire harnesses with sealed, julet, connectors that are specific to the model. As are the lcd’s and controllers. At least the budget bikes are essentially bikes with electric add ons so you still have a bike. High bikes become £2000 + junk.

  3. The twist throddle on the handelbars things is so true!! My one i crashed into shops afew times cos id walk along with it and suddenly it just takes off!! I have to turn the battery off when i get off the bike now to make sure it cant happen but boy ive had some crashes!

Stuck inside with huge snowstorm outside (Eastern Canada). This video made my day. You are a lovely couple, great guys – and you share your very useful tips with a charming (and welcomed) simplicity (the laugh when you guy did the “chest show”!) Thank you from Up Here.

  8. WHAT SHOULD I GET IF I ONLY HAVE 5K TO SPEND ?

  9. Hey guys, I searched the comments and re-watched the video and did not find it. LIZ, I want to buy an ebike for my wife. What is the proper FRAME SIZE for a lady? Your physical feature appear to be similar to hers. She is 5’6" and about 125lbs… suggestions?

  10. Christopher Smith February 21, 2021 @ 9:37 pm

Why ban throttle assisted e bike at all anywhere?. Somebody explain to me. What the problem

  11. Thank you! I am 73 and am buying my first ebike. You did a major service for me.

  12. I like the twist throttle. Range is most important to me. Class 2 best, Throttle and pedal assist. Thanks for bike rack info.

  13. PAS will make your range longer.

  14. Very informative I have owned a 2hp Korean clip on gas powered mountain bike since the 90s and am considering a e-bike just for the silence, smoothness & PC acceptance. This pair gave me a lot to consider before taking the plunge. big Thx.

  15. I just got a delfast top 3.0

  16. I was looking for information on ebikes and luckily I found this video where you managed to clarify in 16 minutes many doubts of mine in an understandable and direct way. thanks!

Hey guys just found you today and really pleased we have your videos are awesome bro. Fantastic editing skills and great footage bro thanks so much for sharing this. Stay safe and catch up again real soon God bless.

  22. You guys are awesome!!! I love your plain information. not only on RV living but good lessons in life….GO LIZ & PAUL

  23. I bought the Prodeco Outlaw almost 7 years ago and still have it. I rode motorcycles/bikes all my life…when I get on it…BEFORE moving, I say "this bike it going to TRY AND KILL ME"..and then I start my ride…….good advice. These things will THROW YOU. This bike is fast …it advertises 30 mph and is off-road. The battery cost was $900 and the total bike price in 2014 was $2300. I would probably advise a lower priced bike to start..I barely use this one. But hope to use it when I start travelling in my RV. Love your videos. Be blessed.

  24. i cannot tell how much i am enjoying this video…this is so motivating…can i? seem yes…

    Wow awesome Information For E_Vike

  26. Minute 6:09 What does it mean that a roadbike can go twice as far as a road bike?

  27. I highly recommend the Aventon Pace 500 Stepthrough. I bought one for $1399.00 with powerful 500 to 750 watts motor, top speed is 28 mph, 20 mph on throttle only. I tried many ebikes in the past & in my opinion this Aventon Pace 500 Step is the winner, the best affordable ebike made with excellence in craftsmanship, engineering and design. I am in love with my Aventon Pace 500 Stepthrough. It is perfect. I love the Stepthrough design. No need to lift my leg to mount it. It is a lightweight 48 pounds. Powerful and quiet that can go uphill like a breeze, great powerful hydraulic disc brake, great pedal assist which helps me at the traffic light stop for an easy & fast get away by just pedaling lightly. The Samsung battery is a powerful 48 volts with a range of 30 miles. To use the thumb throttle you have to pedal first to activate the thumb throttle which is a safety feature & I agree. I love the wide lcd display, the Shimano Altus 8 speed shifter, wide cushy saddle & large comfortable tires. Gives you the ultimate balance in comfort & power with a relaxed upright sitting position in a wide cushy saddle. I guarantee this ride will keep you smiling all day. Stay safe & happy during this pandemic.

  28. Best information I have seen on utube.. Thanks

  29. I noticed that you guys are using a new bike rack on the front of your truck now what is the link to that rack? Also, the link to the bike rack on Amazon is no longer available.

  30. Thank you so much for the experience-driven, no BS advice. Really appreciated.

  31. what is the life span on the motor

  32. Looking for a bike, so I’ve been watching a lot of videos. I wish everyone would just skip the long, unnecessary intros and "bike guys" giving you their resumes and opinions. I just want the facts and you gave them. Thanks.

  33. Great video! You guys work well together. Thanks for all the good info.

  34. Here’s a list that helped me out.
    "whinyl.com/elctrb-guide/
In the end, I went with #6.

  35. Both of you are in amazing shape great job 👍🏻 and remind me of my sweetie and I. She’s 50 im 52 been kissing her since I was 12.. and still kissing her today…. stay fit and stay in love!! And we have the lectric xp and love them. 28mph and 899 price tag

  36. Thanks for the info. I love your jersey!!!

  37. Currently I’m shopping for an ebike that can be foldable so that I can carry inside my locker. What would you recommend?

Height of locker is about 35inx about 16 to 17 inches long in width and length. I’m just trying to find something to fold to make commuting easier.

Thank you for the great video! I’m defiently taking note to what I need to look for when it comes to ebikes

  38. I have an Apollo Valier 17•5Ah battery 1000w motor 48v battery. Ii love in Britain. But it does 30 mph or 48 kph. It was only £1120. It has peddle assist and throttle only. I like to set it at pedal assist 3 not 5 and it does the same as throttle only on 5. But Dave battery anff I get exercise. My question is is 17•5Ahgood enoigh

  39. People with this E everything trend. The time I’ll have respect for people going green when they go off grid and not use electrical company electricity. So by then E community is in denial.

  40. are you going to the rv super show this year?

  41. subbia srinivasan February 21, 2021 @ 10:20 pm

Your cheesy jokes making each other smile is precious! Love you guys!

  42. I am getting ready to by my first ebike.
    Looking at:
    Rad Rover
    Himiway Cruiser
    Yamee Fat Bear Plus 750w
I’m going to use it alot for off road trail riding and may even build a trailer for it.
I have truck with a topper on it and thought the folding Yamee may store better with another bike of the same and camping gear? Not sure if the Yamee is same quality as the other 2 bikes? It does have hydraulic brakes and says it has a better cassette in the rear hub?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

  43. Thanks for all this informations
What you think about vanmoof s3 bike?

  44. her bike is 2500 watts?

  45. Great video… Can you suggest a good bike rack for ebikes on a Mercedes sprinter?

  46. Fun video good information I noticed you shot some of your video at Pacific dunes Ranch I just stayed there I enjoyed myself I love that area I live in Southern California so I have surf the California coast 🤙🏼

  47. Good information, I did have questions about the battery, the life, how many charges can it take, do I have to worry about over charging?

  48. Another option is to buy a good regular mountain bike with good front shocks, good Shimano shifters, hydraulic brakes, and then buy an e-bike kit that most folks can easy install. That option enables you to have better core bike components with an added e-bike kit that gives you good electric paddle assist: http://www.leedsbikes.com.
By converting my wife’s bike into an e-bike she can now easily keep up with me and often on mountains just passes by me and gives me the finger :).

  49. RIZE BIKES
Beware and Do Not Buy, with all the bike choices out there you can skip this company.

    -I bought 2 bikes. About US $3800.00
-I saved Rize shipping costs and picked them at the warehouse.
-1 of the batteries would not charge on the bike with the larger battery, so it quickly died.
-It took the company 6 days to get me a new battery.
-The new battery in the bike did not last long and the bike began to not work well.
-After 1 wk the bike died and would not turn on.
-Rize would not refund me, fix the bike or offer any other solutions.
-I emailed & called spending so much time to try and have them fix this issue but they kept making empty promises.
-My next option, which is painful, will be take them to court & waste more of my time writing bad reviews until I am refunded.

This has been 1 month since I purchased the bike and it just sits in my garage not working.

The bikes were Christmas gifts for my sons to ride together……. that has not worked out.

    dave
